After almost a decade,
legendary New York rockers Nada Surf are finally returning to
Australian shores to celebrate not only the recent release of their seventh
full-length record The Stars Are Indifferent To Astronomy, but also
their entire back catalogue for the first time ever.
Nada Surf is a name
synonymous with music lovers the world over and one that tirelessly transcends
their 1996 hit ‘Popular’ with a discography of what many describe as perfect
indie-pop/rock.
Nada Surf formed in New
York in 1994 but it wasn’t until 1996 that the band released their first full
length studio album High/Low through Elektra Records. The song
‘Popular’ from that album became a summer anthem across the globe. In 1998 the
bands sophomore record The Proximity Effect received rave
reviews, resulting in a heavy touring schedule across continental Europe.
But it was in 2001 when
the real gold began to flow – the band parted ways with Elektra and began
making arguably some of the best indie-pop/rock records America has ever
produced. Let Go came first in 2002, spawned the hit ‘Inside
of Love’ and forged a path that eventually led to four more brilliant albums
– The Weight Is A Gift(2005), Lucky (2008), a
covers collection If I Had A Hi-Fi (2010) and the brand
new The Stars Are Indifferent To Astronomy (2012).
The band maintains healthy
touring in America, South America, the UK and across Europe but, until now, Australian
fans have been starved on this attention for almost ten years. With a whirlwind
tri-state tour that includes Sydney’s the Annandale Hotel, Melbourne’s The
Corner and the famous Spiegeltent as part of Brisbane Festival, the band is
promising a setlist pulled from their 16 year/seven album career.
